From Transactional to Transcendental Leadership - Governance
Evolving from individual, visionary leadership to collective, adaptive, and distributed leadersthip that has the capacity to transcend conventional boundaries and build empowered and engaged citizens may require a shift in metaphor as well as style of dialogue. This path from transactional to transformative to transcendental leadership is nicely reviewed in this article and may be something to consider for our DC team.
Change Community Palmer
CHANGE COMMUNITY, CONFLICT, AND WAYS OF KNOWING WAYS TO DEEPEN OUR EDUCATIONAL AGENDA by Parker J. Palmer (SEP./OCT.) Twelve years ago, my own yearning for community in education led me out of the mainstream of higher education to a small place called Pendle Hill, a 55-year-old Quaker living/learning community near Philadelphia. It is a place where everyone–from teachers to cooks to administrators–receives the same base salary as a witness to community. At Pendle Hill, rigorous study of philosophy, nonviolent social change, and other subjects, goes right alongside washing the dishes each day, making decisions by consensus, and taking care of each other, as well as reaching out to the world.
Collaborative Learning Beckman
Evidence suggests that inexperienced clinical teachers are often controlling and noninteractive. Adult learning theory states that mature students prefer shared and self-directed learning and that skillful teachers favor facilitating discussions over transmitting knowledge. Similarly, education research shows that effective clinical teachers invest in relationships with learners, ask questions to diagnose learners, communicate complex information clearly, and provide meaningful feedback. On the basis of these principles, we propose a collaborative approach to clinical teaching that has 4 essential components: (1) establish a relationship with the learner, (2) diagnose the learner, (3) use teaching frameworks that engage learners, and (4) develop teaching scripts and a personal philosophy. This article includes suggestions for creating a positive learning climate, asking higher-order questions, providing meaningful feedback, and developing teaching scripts. We believe that practicing this approach, which emphasizes respectful teacher-learner relationships, improves the quality of every clinical teaching encounter.
How Successful Leaders Think?
We look for lessons in the actions of great leaders. We should instead be examining what goes on in their heads--particularly the way they creatively build on the tensions among conflicting ideas. By Roger Martin

Destination Rochester - A lot to do AND Doing a lot!
As I reflected on our board prep questions, I was amazed at how we already have a lot going for us (in our community) and how we have the potential to impact a lot beyond our city, via ambassadorships, exchanges, and now I.T. and mobile interactive communication technologies. We actually already have the key ingredients in place to have the means to any transformational 'Ends' we choose to set for ourselves - exciting stuff!!
