Getting Updates - Spark! Facilitators & Stakeholders

“Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand.” ~ Chinese Proverb

As we move into a new generation, we will have to start sharing and gathering information the same way the youth we outreach to, do it.  That is through the "interweb" previously known as the internet.  The generation of today consider themselves to be the digital generation, a generation of social media, facebook, twittering, tumblr, and texting.  Unfortunately, the dangers to this kind of quick changing society, in general, is a disconnect from face to face human connection.  This is an interesting time for the Diversity Council and Spark!, and this is a wonderful opportunity, for us to start meeting the students at the level where they are at today.  How are we going to use technology, in order to educate Spark! students about human differences?  First of all, we need to start using the internet in a mindful way.  It's not going away, and if you're not going to learn how to facebook, then you won't be able relate to what youth today face.  If you don't already have a facebook account, please start one today.  Once, you have done that, please friend me by following this link:  https://www.facebook.com/thevangie

By creating an environment, for free exchange of ideas and information, I hope to ensure accessibility, transparency, and accountability, for myself and the community.  In the end, I would hope this will create community engagement, sharing of resources, and future community building.

Here’s an interesting article I’d like to share with you folks from The Huffington Post:

Vangie, I couldn't agree with you more on the balanced use of technology. I am kind of a technology guy. I also would like to think of myself of using IT in a "mindful" way. While there is no going back to the "good old days" of paper, pencil and pocket calculators and that the internet and social media have "flattened" the world and torn down walls, the challenge is whether we can still find the time and the patience to talk to each other face-to-face, heart to heartl--deeply, respectfully and openly. I hope we can. Spark! and the other DC programs have the potential to build the communication bridge so we may see the other as ourselves.

Look forward to travelling the journey with you and the other Spark! members ... Al
