Greetings, all! Next Saturday afternoon, Feb. 21, the Diversity Council is hosting a viewing of the movie Hairspray (the 2007 John Travolta version, not the 1988 John Waters version!), followed by a discussion of sizism. The target audience is middle- and high-schoolers. Is anyone interested in volunteering to join me to facilitate the sizism discussion following the movie? It is a fun movie, and we’ll have great popcorn from Carroll’s Corn, although the discussion may prove to be a challenging one. Please let me know if you are willing and able to help out. Feel free to call my cell phone if you have any questions: 269-9200. Thanks for considering this request!
Rochester Reads: Hairspray and What's the Big Deal?
Saturday, February 21, 1 - 4 p.m.
Rochester Public Library Auditorium
As part of the Rochester Reads celebration of Steve Almond's Candy Freak, the Diversity Council will be screening the musical Hairspray, about a young girl who breaks out of the narrow mold and brings her big moves to the dance floor. The film will be followed by a discussion of sizism--discrimination based on a person's weight. Appropriate for middle school and up. Free admission and refreshments.
